"I saw young Harry, with his beaver on, his cushes on his thighs, gallantly arm'd,
Rise from the ground like feather'd Mercury, and vaulted with such ease into his seat,
As if an angel dropp'd down from the clouds, to turn and wind a fiery Pegasus,
And witch the world with noble horsemanship."

William Shakespeare

Of the many associations between Man and horse, several are well demonstrated in the rural area surrounding Melton Mowbray and, in the shape of the Defence Animal Centre (formerly colloquially "The Remount", the Headquarters of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps) in the town itself.
Welby Lane was the last Army Remount Depot. Extensively used throughout the War as an equine assembly area (at one stage some 8,000 animals were held at Melton Mowbray) it comprised about 300 acres of pasture with much stable accommodation and some veterinary support facilities and subsequently became the established HQ of RAVC and the location of the internationally famous DAC.
Its two Regimental Marches "Drink Puppy Drink" and "A Hunting we will go" say it all.
Few man-horse relationships and activities, after the season's Fox-hunting, are so pronounced as those of Eventing and Horse Trials with the associated disciplines of Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country, and Point to Point. Fortunately the use of the horse as a beast of burden or a power-tool substitute or as Pit Ponies is now virtually unheard of locally. There is a dearth of Horse Racing and Polo in this area.

Horses and ponies in the UK are nowadays used mainly for riding: many horses are kept solely for leisure and enjoyment: horse ownership and riding may be a means of enjoying the countryside or taking part in showing or jumping competitions: many people, adults and children, learn to ride at local riding stables, there are also many horses that are kept and ridden professionally such as racehorses and show jumpers. Horses are also used by the army and the police. Thus it can be seen that horses undoubtedly form a large part of our lives and living and one source suggests that there are between 600,000 and 1.2 million of them in the United Kingdom!
Fortunately therefore there are facts, statistics and, importantly, Veterinary surveillance of Horses with sections on almost every aspect of Disease control, an extensive Glossary of terms (an A-Z index of diseases), and links to other sites making it a virtual portal to all you require at the website of DEFRA (HMG's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).

GARTHORPE RACECOURSE is local to Melton Mowbray and is the venue for Hunt's Point-to-Point races etc. Dates and Fixtures are readily available from the website.
