Claire Lomas, of Eye Kettleby, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire an extremely talented event rider, who has produced horses and competed at 4* level, had a freak accident while competing at Osberton Horse Trials in May 2007.
She collided with a tree which resulted in fractures to her neck, back and ribs. She suffered a punctured lung, pneumonia, had to have a tracheotomy to help her breathe and was in intensive care for 10 days.
The fracture in her back caused damage to Claire's spinal cord resulting in her being transferred to the Northern General Hospital's Spinal Injuries Unit. Claire left Sheffield after 8 weeks - the shortest time anyone has ever spent in that hospital with her type of injury.
Claire is still paralysed but determined to get better.
She is at home now but we need to raise money to help her with her rehabilitation. She has been to America to do 'Project Walk'. Apart from regular physiotherapy, she needs equipment that will aid her recovery.
MUSEUM OF HUNTING
Melton Carnegie Museum is the locus for the project THE HUNTING MUSEUM (Britain's only national hunting museum) under the aegis of The Museum of Hunting Trust which will be a virtual exhibition covering the entire subject controversial and otherwise. A spur to this was the (May 2005) Heritage Lottery Fund's award of £50,000 which enabled the project "Foxhunting Past, Present and Future". The exhibits include examples of historic hunting horns, Hunt buttons, hunting dress, hunting history, a library of hunting books for consultation and throughout 2009 the Museum is closed to allow for an extension which will enable more scope for exhibits. There are oral interviews with those who work in trades connected with hunting as well as Hunt staff and veteran hunting people on the new website www.foxhuntingvoices.org.uk
The HUNTING ACT 2004 came into force on 18th February 2005 after which date a person commits an offence (s1) if he hunts a wild mammal with a dog, unless his hunting is exempt - (exempt hunting is defined in the Act).
